New Zealand Centre to be established in IIT Delhi

Education New Zealand (ENZ) has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi (IIT Delhi) to establish a New Zealand Centre.

The New Zealand Centre is envisioned by ENZ to become a point of collaborative academic activity with IIT Delhi for eight NZ universities in India.

The New Zealand universities participating in the establishment of the New Zealand Centre in IIT Delhi include AUT University, University of Auckland, Massey University, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Otago, University of Canterbury and Lincoln University.

NZ made $1.16b from foreign students in 2018

A rise in enrolments has seen New Zealand make NZ $1.16 billion in tuition revenue from foreign students in 2018.

The average tuition fee per student increased by $960, leading to an increase in revenue despite a 6% decrease in international students enrolling compared to 2017.

32 new scholarships for Indians to study in New Zealand

32 new scholarships worth Rupees 8.2 million have been announced to encourage Indians to study in New Zealand.

Called the ‘New Zealand Excellence Award’ scholarship programme, the initiative was championed by Education New Zealand (ENZ).

Grant McPherson, Chief Executive of ENZ, said: “The New Zealand Excellence Award scholarship programme is beneficial for both countries.

“It helps Indian students pursue a range of specialist programmes in areas such as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), business and creative arts at New Zealand universities. Already over 100 talented Indian students have benefitted from these scholarships.”

New Zealand and India education links to strengthen

Representatives from universities in New Zealand and India met in Mumbai last month to discuss strengthening their education links.

New Zealand has been ranked as the best English-speaking education system in preparing students for the future by The Economist Intelligence Unit.

This is possibly the reason that New Zealand is fast becoming the preferred education destination for Indian students, according to the Press Trust of India.

Young students ignore New Zealand from options

Young students seeking to study overseas are shunning New Zealand from their options amid the country’s high fees and cost of living, a study found.

Melbourne-based QS Enrolment Solutions, in a report released this month, said that it found only 25 percent of 77,000 students inquiring about New Zealand universities to be interested, whereas 50 percent are more into Australian universities.
