Australia international student numbers continue to rise

Australia has announced an increase of 11% in the number of international student numbers as of September 2019 when compared to the same month last year.

With 720,150 international students currently enrolled across various sectors, Australia’s position has been reconfirmed as the second-most popular destination in the world, after only the US.

This growth is a continuation of the trend of rise in international student numbers in Australia, as reported by ICEF Monitor.

19 Indian students bag A$500K University of Sydney scholarship

19 young Indian students have become recipients of a prestigious new University of Sydney scholarship programme designed specially for Indian students – Sydney Scholars India Scholarship.

The students include Madhullikaa Singh from Bombay and Aryan Bhatia from Delhi, who each received A$20,000 for their Bachelors’ degree programmes.

Worth A$500,000 per annum in total, the Sydney Scholars India Scholarship includes ten A$20,000 per annum grants and fifteen A$10,000 grants besides the two major grants of A$50,000 per annum.

La Trobe ‘Smart Cities’ research network launched in India

Three institutions spearheaded by Australia’s La Trobe University have joined hands to form the ‘Asian Smart Cities Research and Innovation Network’ in India, with a fund of £7.5 million (Indian Rupees 65 crores) available to researchers.

From the three institutitons – The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani and La Trobe University – 50 students will be selected to pursue research on a problem related to the Smart City initiative from the government of India.

Fast-track Australia Global Talent Independent Program launched

The Australian government have unveiled a new fast-track tech immigration programme for highly-skilled global talent as part of its newfound effort to address the local skills gap and grow the tech sector.

Australia’s Home Affairs department has set aside 5000 immigration visa places within the existing permanent migration programme – capped at 160,000 places – for the new “Global Talent Independent Program”.

More ‘Welcome Desks’ planned for foreign students in Perth Airport

StudyPerth, a West Australia-based education association, is expanding its Welcome Desk stations at Perth Airport this year in efforts to give foreign students in Perth a more welcoming greeting.

StudyPerth Executive Director Phil Payne said that the association will set up new service desks at terminals 3 and 4 at the said airport, where it expects to welcome 13,000 international students by 2020.
