Tier 4 visa extension for Chinese students proposed

The National Union of Students (NUS) has called for an automatic extension of Tier 4 visa issued to Chinese students pursuing education in the UK amongst other measures to help them during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has caused significant disruption to classrooms across the world and several institutions within the UK have closed campuses as well.

International students, particularly Chinese students, find themselves in problematic circumstances with exam postponements, closure of student housing facilities, and the issue of their Tier 4 student visas running out.

Western Sydney University offers $1500 for Chinese students to return

Australia’s Western Sydney University has announced that it will offer AUD $1500 to Chinese students in order to subsidise their return to studies at the university.

The Coronavirus travel ban currently restricts travel to Australia from mainland China, and individuals travelling from China must first spend 14 days in another country before they can return to Australia.

Western Sydney University is offering a one-off subsidy to affected Chinese students to help cover this additional travel cost, so that they can return and commence their studies.

Chinese students are reportedly on the lookout for alternative study destinations other than the United States amid an ongoing trade spat between Washington and Beijing, threatening an important revenue source for American universities.

Data from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed that in March this year, the number of Chinese students—which accounted for nearly a third of foreign students in the US—significantly dropped by 2 percent for the first time in 10 years.
