NZ government granted emergency powers over education sector due to Coronavirus

The NZ government has been granted stronger emergency powers over the country’s education institutions to help limit the spread of Coronavirus.

The Parliament of New Zealand has passed the COVID-19 Response Legislation Bill which amends the Education Act 1989 and gives the Secretary for Education the authority to issue binding instructions to New Zealand education providers.

The latest New Zealand immigration statistics have revealed a pronounced 31% drop in student visa applications from foreign students looking to study in NZ.

In 2019-20, there were 77,045 applications for student visas, which was a 31% drop from 2018-19’s 111,809 applications.

These numbers mean that the financial year of 2019-20 in NZ saw the lowest number of student visa applications for over 10 years.

The New Zealand Centre is envisioned by ENZ to become a point of collaborative academic activity with IIT Delhi for eight NZ universities in India.

The New Zealand universities participating in the establishment of the New Zealand Centre in IIT Delhi include AUT University, University of Auckland, Massey University, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Otago, University of Canterbury and Lincoln University.
