Ahead of the UK General Election on Thursday 12 December 2019, the Institute of Student Employers (ISE) has published a manifesto that it claims is ‘representing the calls of hundreds of Britain’s largest employers who collectively bring tens of thousands of young people into high quality employment every year’.

20 top UK universities strike £50m renewable energy deal

Twenty of the leading UK universities have struck a £50 million deal to buy renewable energy directly from British windfarms, The Guardian has reported.

This 10-year collaborative clean energy deal will see electricity from wind farms across Scotland and Wales supplied to universities including Newcastle University, the University of Exeter and Aberystwyth University.

This deal, which has been dubbed a “power purchase agreement” or PPA, is the first time that UK public sector energy users have joined together to buy cleaner energy.

UK suffering from soft skills crisis, finds Instructure report

New research from edtech company Instructure (NYSE:INST) has revealed that educators and business leaders believe UK is suffering from a soft skills crisis, threatening the productivity of UK Plc.

The Instructure Skills Study: preparing for the 2030 workplace report, which draws from a Censuswide study, shows that about 68% of secondary school teachers and 64% of businesses believe that lack the soft skills needed to be successful in the workplace.

Approximately seven in ten of all surveyed believe that soft skills for not get enough attentions in the much-publicised skills gap debate.

Trustworthy digital information most important to students: TechnologyOne study

Students in the UK are most concerned with a trustworthy, consistent digital information flow from their university, a TechnologyOne study conducted by YouGov has found.

The study, which surveyed 1,026 students in the UK, shows that reliable online access to course materials, exam results, timetables, and administrative and admissions information is one of the highest priorities for over 90 per cent of students.

88 percent of students surveyed also cited consistent, multi-device and location access to this information as being important.

Lancaster and Loughborough universities have announced that they are to join Realising Opportunities (RO), the Newcastle University-led widening access project.

The addition of these two universities means that there are now sixteen universities across England participating in the project which provides opportunities for 16-17 year olds from backgrounds largely underrepresented in higher education.

The project offers a programme of activity designed to support them to make an informed choice about their university application and develop skills vital for study in higher education.
