Germany and India sign education agreements

Germany and India have sealed multiple education agreements to further links between the two countries.

India and Germany have together signed over 20 agreements, including several Joint Declarations of Intent (JDI) in the fields of education, artificial intelligence (AI), agriculture, and maritime technology, among others.

This followed talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Number of foreign students in Germany rises again

The number of foreign students in Germany grew again last year, albeit at a slower pace as compared with 2017, according to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

In its annual report, DAAD said that the number of foreign students who entered Germany last year grew to 374,580 from the 358,900 in 2017, but growth was slightly slower by 4.4 percent than the 5.5 percent reported in 2017.

The German government is planning to increase the number of refugee scholars by 2030 in a bid to address the “frighteningly low” level of their access to higher education.

Through its Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative or DAFI, the government said it was aiming to achieve 15 percent of refugee scholars to access tertiary education from only 1 percent at present.
