Report calls for reform of India’s higher education system

India’s higher education system continues to grow rapidly but is in need of significant reform, a Brookings India report has said.

There are now 35.7 million students enrolled in programmes at India’s universities and colleges.

India’s higher education system is one of the largest in the world and the country has close to 52,000 institutions and a rapidly growing enrolment with four times as many enrolments this year compared to 2001, according to a November 2019 Brookings India report entitled Reviving Higher Education in India.

Manchester and Tsinghua launch dual PhD programme

The University of Manchester and Tsinghua University have launched a new dual PhD programme in Synthetic and Systems Biology, with the first cohort of students are to commence studies in September 2020.

The dual PhD programme builds on the existing collaborative agreement between Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and Tsinghua University’s Centre for Synthetic and Systems Biology, signed in 2016.

The United Kingdom-based University of Manchester and the Chinese Tsinghua University have had an ongoing relationship for several years since the establishment of ties in 2007 during the tenures of Professor Alan Gilbert and Professor Gu Binglin.

China, Singapore and HK dominate QS Asia University Rankings top 10

The top 10 of the QS Asia University Rankings 2020 published last week is dominated by universities in China, Singapore and Hong Kong.

This marks the first year that four of the top 10 are universities located in China.

The QS Asia University Rankings 2020, which are put together by London based QS Quacquarelli Symonds, feature 550 universities, including 68 new entries. The rankings are based on 10 different indicators, including academic and employer reputation.

UKIBC study reveals top barriers to deeper UK-India HE collaboration

The United Kingdom’s immigration policy and India’s higher education policy have been found to be the top barriers toward establishing deeper UK-India HE collaboration, a UKIBC study has found.

A report published by the UK-India Business Council (UKIBC) titled Higher Education Collaboration: Futureproofing the UK India Partnership has looked at the benefits that UK Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) gain from India and the barriers that are currently in the way of deeper collaboration.

The report draws from an initial survey of 67 higher education institutions across the UK.

Indian student numbers in UK up 63%

There has been a 63% year-on-year increase in Indian student numbers in the UK, according to a statement from the British High Commission in New Delhi.

The latest UK Immigration Statistics published this month (28th November 2019) show that over 30,000 Indian students received a Tier 4 (study) visa for the year ending September 2019. This is an increase from almost 19,000 in the previous year.

The 63% increase that the UK has seen has been described as “remarkable” in a statement from the British High Commission in New Delhi given that it is four times as fast as the global rate.

Earlier this month, Global Education Times reported the CHE’s intent is to double foreign student numbers from 12,000 (current) to 24,000 as part of its Study in Israel initiative.

The number of Indian students in Taiwan has shot up by 56% to 2,398 students between 2017 and 2018, according to figures shared with Global Education Times.

Recent data from the Taiwan Ministry of Education shared with Global Education Times shows that the total number of Indian students pursuing their education in Taiwan has increased a sharp growth in just one year, registering an increase of 56% from 2017 to 2018.

In 2003, figures indicate that only 5 Indian students were enrolled on programmes in Taiwan, showing an incredible 15-year total growth of almost 48,000%, as the country becomes a more attractive destination of study.
