Online coding school Codemao secures $57 million funding

Chinese online education platform Codemao has announced this week that 400 million yuan ($57 million) has been secured in a Series C round of financing led by the Russia-China Investment Fund.

Codemao specialises in offering online coding classes to children and young adults.

Also joining this round of funding were Hillhouse Capital; Asia-focused private equity firm SAIF Partners; Everbright New Economy USD Fund, a $483-million investment platform of Hong Kong-based financial services company China Everbright Limited; and Chinese state-owned Guangdong Technology Financial Group.

ByteDance to launch AI teacher by 2020

Chinese internet company ByteDance is set to release a 24-hour artificial intelligence (AI) teacher for K-12 students in China by 2020.

In 2018, ByteDance challenged the Tencent-backed VIPKid when they launched Gogokid, an online English teaching platform.

Then, in May 2019, the company officially released an online education portal offering mathematics and language courses for K-12, taught by graduates of Peking and Tsinghua universities, the top two universities in China.

China and Asian business schools see rise in applications

As the China and Asian economies shows increased strength, and opportunities in the East continuously emerge, the region has become an attractive destination for business schools candidates.

Among Asia-Pacific programmes, almost half reported a growth in domestic applications, with a fifth seeing a stable application volume from domestic candidates. Looking at international applicants, 37% reported a growth and 32% stated their international applications remained stable.

Most (90%) applicants to business schools in the region hailed from within the Asia-Pacific region.

China has granted permission to 45 colleges to deliver MBBS medical degrees in English to international students in the country.

A record number of students from India are now enrolling to study medicine in China.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has asked all Indian universities that have entered into any student or faculty exchange pact with a counterpart in China to not undertake any activities until the Ministry of Home Affairs gives the go ahead.

UGC secretary Rajnish Jain stated in a letter issued to the vice chancellors of all universities that those varsities which have already entered into a pact with a Chinese university must attain clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs for operating any agreement and until this clearance is obtained, no activities should be performed.
