India to roll out IND-SAT exams across Asia and Africa

The government of India hopes to increase international student enrolment in the Study in India campaign by the introduction of an IND-SAT aptitude test.

The Indian government has formalised its budget for the year 2020 and special attention was given to the Study in India initiative which was launched in 2018.

The aim of the Study in India initiative was to increase the number of international students coming to India for graduate and post graduate studies.

Western Sydney University offers $1500 for Chinese students to return

Australia’s Western Sydney University has announced that it will offer AUD $1500 to Chinese students in order to subsidise their return to studies at the university.

The Coronavirus travel ban currently restricts travel to Australia from mainland China, and individuals travelling from China must first spend 14 days in another country before they can return to Australia.

Western Sydney University is offering a one-off subsidy to affected Chinese students to help cover this additional travel cost, so that they can return and commence their studies.

Foreign students granted increased work rights in Russia

Russia has approved a new law which will significantly improve the work rights available to foreign students pursuing education in the country.

The new law will allow foreign students more flexibility in obtaining employment and lift restrictions currently in place on working during education.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given the green signal to a new law which will simplify working rights of foreign students, which, at present, mandates that foreign students can only seek employment without a work permit at their state-accredited university during their free time or during their days off.

Over half of Cyprus higher education enrolments now foreign students

27,000 of 51,000 students in Cyprus higher education – more than half – in 2018-19 were foreign students, according to the Cyprus Ministry of Education.

Overall, the number of students attending higher education institutions in Cyprus has risen by 59% since 2013, to 51,000 students in 2019.

Of note, in the last set of data released prior to the current report, out of the 48,000 students attending Cypriot higher education colleges in the academic year 2017-18, half of these originated from EU and third countries (non-EU), a proportion that has since grown.
